Chris Carmichael & Dr. Stacy Sims: Compression for Recovery
Elite cycling coach Chris Carmichael sits down with exercise physiologist Dr. Stacy Sims to talk about one of the newest trends in training: compression for recovery. Compression is a relatively new recovery modality that has gained a lot of attention. There are two primary ways that compression is used: pneumatic compression and elastic compression. With pneumatic compression, an athlete sits with his legs in “boots” that contain several isolated chambers. A pump fills the chambers to exert a specific pressure on the athlete’s legs (or arms, etc.). The chambers fill sequentially, then release and repeat the cycle. Elastic compression utilizes apparel like compression socks, tights, or shirts to apply pressure to the body. In either method of compression, the idea is to facilitate the body’s natural process of pumping blood and extracellular fluid back toward the heart.
