Wear Compression socks for Wounds
Did you ever wonder why it takes sooooooooooooooooooo long for bug bites, cuts, burns, biopsy sites, or wounds on your lower legs to heal? Well, it is because of the very high pressure in the blood vessels in this area of the body compared to elsewhere on your body when you are standing. Think of it this way; you have a column of fluid that is as tall as you are. At the bottom of the column, the weight or pressure of the fluid trying to go out of the column (or in this case, your veins) is really high. Some of the blood actually does come out of the column…especially red blood cells. This sometimes leads to permanent brownish or redishbrown discoloration on your lower legs after an injury. The increased pressure also makes it so the wound-healing cells that are normally supposed to be there doing their job can’t get to their destination as easily….so things take alot longer to heal and are more prone to infection for the same reasons. A simple solution is to wear knee-high compression socks. The compression socks exert pressure that is counter to or opposing the pressure from the column of fluid. This kind of evens the pressure out so the cells that are trying to get to the wound can get there, and the cells that are trying to leave the wound can leave. Make sense? I hope so! There are lots of on-line stores where you can buy affordable compression socks. One I like is www.footsmart.com. Be sure you measure yourself according to their directions or they don’t fit …
